Workshop 1: Improv(e) Your Foundations: The Anatomy of a Swing Out ~ July 7th
Great improvisation starts with a rock-solid and effortless foundation. This week, we are stripping the swing-out down to its roots. We’ll explore the ergonomics of proper posture and frame, ensuring your dancing feels good and stays injury-free.
Workshop 2: Let’s Dance: The Conversation of Partnership ~ July 14th
Lindy Hop isn’t a monologue; it’s a conversation. Now that our posture and frame are dialed in, we will focus on the microscopic shifts in weight and connection that make leading and following feel like mind reading. Learn how to listen to your partner’s momentum, co-create shapes on the fly, and how to use clear connection to transition seamlessly from structured patterns into playful, collaborative improvisation.
Workshop 3: Slow Bluesy Textures ~ July 21st
When the tempo drops, the space between the beats opens up—and that can feel intimidating! This week, we step into the sultry world of slow-tempo dancing. We will pull techniques from Blues dance to master the art of the drag step, deep pulse, and weighted connection. Learn how to stretch time, use the space to breathe, and discover why slow dancing requires the ultimate partnership and musicality.
Workshop 4: High Gear & Fast Feet: When the Music Get Speedy ~ July 28th
Don’t run off the floor when the DJ cranks up the BPM! This week is all about survival and style at high speeds. We will unlock the secrets to high-energy Charleston and introduce the absolute basics of Balboa—the ultimate close-embrace dance designed for lightning-fast music. You’ll leave with new techniques, compact footwork, and streamlined posture needed to dance to fast tempos with total coolness and zero panic.
Workshop 5: “That Was a Great Dance!” The Art of being a Sharp Social Dancer ~ August 4th
What makes a dance memorable? It’s not the hardest move; it’s the connection to the music and your partner. This week is entirely dedicated to the social floor. We will explore how to hear the “hits” in a big band arrangement, inject spontaneous play, and borrow a page or two from West Coast Swing concepts regarding elasticity and slots to give your social dancing an effortlessly smooth, conversational flow and how to leave ‘em wanting more…
Workshop 6: The Roots & Branches: Exploring the Swing Family Tree ~ August 11th
Lindy Hop doesn’t exist in a vacuum. This week, we take a whirlwind tour of the dances that fed into and branched out of the Savoy tradition. We will play with the classic rhythmic structures of classic jazz steps, look at how the Peabody/swing walk can travel across a floor, and piece these historical flavors together into a mini-choreography challenge inspired by the Shim Sham to supercharge your solo movement and rhythmic accuracy.
Workshop 7: Terrific Twirls & Style: The Goldilocks Zone ~ August 18th
At a perfect medium tempo, we have the headspace and time to inject pure style into our dance. Get ready to tackle the mechanics of “terrific twirls”—giving leads the prep-and-release secrets for smooth spins, and learning spotting tricks for gorgeous, balanced turns. Then, we will break away into solo movement to master some traveling vernacular steps, including fancy camel walks and rhythmic, sweeping strides to glide effortlessly across the ballroom floor.
